  • Thomas Dexter Jakes Sr. known as Bishop TD Jakes was born on June 9th, 1957 and he is an American entrepreneur and the lead pastor of The Potter’s House Church based in Dallas.
  • On January 20, 2009, TD Jakes led the early morning prayer service for President Barack Obama at St. John’s Church in Washington, DC.
  • Bishop TD Jakes was born in South Charleston, West Virginia to Ernest Jakes, Sr., a janitor and entrepreneur, and Odith, an educator.
  • He was known in his West Virginian neighborhood as “the bad Bible boy” when he was still a Child and was also told he would never be able to preach because of his “bad” lisp.
  • In 1979, he founded Greater Emmanuel Temple of Faith with only ten initial members as a storefront church in Montgomery, West Virginia.
  • Bishop Jakes once worked as a ditch digger and in1982 he turned to full-time ministry.
  • His father died from kidney failure.
  • In 1996, Jakes founded The Potter’s House in Dallas, Texas, with almost 50 families that relocated with him from his former congregation in Cross Lanes.
