Chris Tomlin is an American contemporary Christian music singer, songwriter, and worship leader who has sold over 7 million CDs. He is a Passion Conferences member and is signed to EMI’s sixstepsrecords.

Biography

Christopher Dwayne Tomlin was born in 1972 in Grand Saline, Texas to Donna and Connie Tomlin. Ryan and Cory are his two younger brothers. Tomlin received his first guitar from his father and learnt to play by listening to Willie Nelson albums.

He wrote his first worship song when he was fourteen years old. Also, he learnt to lead worship in his youth group during high school. He enrolled in Tyler Junior College (TJC) after graduating from Grand Saline High School in 1990, intending to pursue a medical or physical therapy career. Ultimately he obtained a degree in psychology from Texas A&M.

The gospel minister  is one of the members of CompassionArt, a charity and songwriting team that released an album in 2008. In 2014, he became a member on the board of directors of CURE International, a nonprofit organization that provides medical care to children in the developing world.

Tomlin stated in May 2008 that he was leaving the Austin Stone Community Church to co-found a new church in Atlanta, Georgia, with Louie Giglio. On February 15, 2009, the Passion City Church had its inaugural service, with Tomlin serving as one of its worship leaders.

Education

Tomlin attended Texas A&M University to study for a career in medicine after graduating from high school in 1992. He became more involved with Breakaway, a student Christian organization, and rose to the position of worship leader.

He eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Texas A&M in 1994. After graduating from college, Tomlin led worship at a number of Texas camps, including the Dawson McAllister Youth Conferences. Tomlin took part in a Bible study given by Choice Ministries’ founder Louie Giglio when he was at Breakaway. Tomlin and Giglio founded Passion Conferences in 1997.

Tomlin married Lauren Bricken on November 9, 2010, The couple are blessed with three daughters; Ashlyn, Madison, and Elle.  They live on a 25-acre (10-hectare) estate which they called “Peacefield” on the outskirts of Franklin, Tennessee.

Career

Inside Your Love was released independently by Tomlin in 1995. Sparrow Records released Authentic in 1998.

Tomlin signed with sixstepsrecords, a division of Passion Conferences, in 2000. His first nationally released solo project, The Noise We Make, featured the song “Forever” and was released in 2001. In 2002, he released the live EP 545 as well as his second studio album Not to Us.

Tomlin has released nine full-length studio albums since signing with sixstepsrecords. Arriving was the first album to chart on Billboard’s Hot Christian Albums chart as well as the Billboard 200. Tomlin has six Hot Christian Albums chart toppers, and his 2013 album Burning Lights was the fourth contemporary Christian album to top the Billboard 200.

Tomlin has also released one live album, recorded at Austin Music Hall, as well as two Christmas albums (2009, 2015), both of which topped Billboard’s Holiday albums chart.

The phenomenal gospel artist has shared the stage with a number of modern Christian performers, including Delirious?, Steven Curtis Chapman, Michael W. Smith, and MercyMe. Also, he has headlined multiple tours and collaborated with Passion Conferences on national and international tours and events. Tomlin has also attended other conferences and festivals, such as Grand Saline’s annual Salt Festival in Texas, Hillsong’s 2007 conference, and the SoCal Harvest in Anaheim.

On Space Shuttle flight STS-117 on June 14, 2007, Tomlin’s version of “Indescribable” was used as the official wake-up call for flight Specialist Patrick Forrester.

Awards and Achievements

Tomlin has 23 GMA Dove Awards, a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album for his 2012 album And If Our God Is for Us…, and two RIAA platinum albums to his credit. Time magazine declared him the “most often sung artist anywhere” due to the popularity of his songs in numerous contemporary churches. Burning Lights, Tomlin’s 2013 album, opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, making it the fourth CCM album to do so.

Tomlin received two Visionary Award nominations in 2009: Male Entertainer of the Year and Song of the Year for “Jesus Messiah.”
