Pastor Dollar continues with last week’s topic, “The Conditions for Acceptable Good Works,” and in this message he teaches us about the five conditions for works acceptable to God. Doing good work is really a nice thing, but it all depends on our intention and motive for doing it. The Bible says that for those of us who have been created by God, we’ve been created in his workmanship unto good works. The question now is, “What’s motivating those good works? Good works, which are an important part of God’s purpose for every born-again believer, are acceptable to God.
Only under certain conditions, and we’ve discovered that even in the church, we do a lot of good things but are motivated by the wrong things. Most Christians do good works not for Jesus but to receive validation and awards from other people. We have to do good work for God, not for people’s acceptance but for God’s acceptance. If you’re doing good works while others aren’t, and you’re doing them for the wrong reasons, eventually you’re going to get frustrated and burdened, even by the good works. When you’re doing good work for the wrong reason, you can get frustrated. That’s what happened with Mary and Martha. Martha, the Bible says, was encumbered or burdened because of the good works that she was doing. God wants us to sit and receive from him, not just work.
Jesus rebuked Martha, saying, “You know you got burdened down with a bunch of good works. Why? Because you had them out of priority.” The priority is to sit before me and receive from me before you try to do things for me. A lot of Christians work really hard to do things for God, but they haven’t received anything from God, and the problem with that is if you’re not being moved by the right motives, even the good works will become burdensome and tire you. You will get a bad attitude when someone does nothing.
