But deliver us from the evil one.
Matthew 6:13

The Allied invasion of Europe, commonly called D-Day, began on June 6, 1944—to set in motion the defeat of Nazi Germany. Once D-Day occurred, it took another fifteen months for World War II to officially end. Though the end of Nazi Germany was decided on D-Day, much fighting remained until the war ended. There is often a gap between a decision to end a conflict and the ultimate deliverance.

The same is true in the spiritual realm. Jesus’ death and resurrection can be likened to D-Day—when Satan’s fate was sealed. The apostle Paul wrote that all who belong to Christ have been delivered from the domain of darkness to the Kingdom of the Son (Colossians 1:13). Yet we are still given instructions in the New Testament for defending ourselves from Satan’s attacks (Ephesians 6:10-18). That is the reason Jesus taught His disciples to pray for deliverance “from the evil one.” Even though the battle is decided, the “war” continues until the end (Revelation 20:10).

As a Christian, you have been eternally delivered from the power of Satan and are daily delivered by God’s grace and power.

God would never permit evil, if He could not bring good out of evil.
Augustine
