The prodigal son was lost, not just physically removed but spiritually and relationally. He had intentionally wished his father dead and cut off communication by moving to a faraway land. When he returned, he was celebrated with abandon, generosity, and joy. As his father celebrated the restoration of his son, everyone who loved the father joined in. They knew how much the son meant to the father: They loved the son because they loved the father.
Although the older brother had never left home, his heart was in a faraway land: Instead of mirroring the father’s joy, he was afraid there was not enough of the father’s wealth to go around. His love for his father was replaced by the priority and love for money, and what he felt he deserved.
The angels of God know better. God’s power, peace, presence, and provision are infinite. People are the pinnacle of God’s creation and angels know the depth, width, and height of God’s love: It never ends. Angels throw a party every time a human being returns to God and are intimately involved in the lives of God’s people.
