Names have long been associated with occupation or vocation: Baker, Miller, Smith, and more. The man who led Israel into the Promised Land—the protégé of Moses—we know as Joshua. But his name was originally Hoshea which meant “salvation” in Hebrew (Numbers 13:8). But after Hoshea professed faith in God to save the Hebrew nation from the giants in Canaan, Moses changed Hoshea’s name to Joshua: “Jehovah is salvation” (Numbers 13:16). Hoshea was originally identified as a “saver”; now he would be identified as one who trusted in God for salvation.
Joseph was given the name of his and Mary’s forthcoming Son by an angel of the Lord in a dream: Iesous (English “Jesus”), the Greek form of the Hebrew Joshua—“for He will save His people from their sins.” The same God who made Joshua a “saver” would now come to earth to save His people, in person, from their sins.
That is why the Savior’s name is Jesus; that is why He came to earth—to reconcile God and His people for eternity. And that is why we celebrate Him at Christmas.
