Beliefs of Hillsong Church
Bible: The Bible is God’s Word. It is accurate, authoritative and applicable to our everyday lives.
God: There is one eternal God who is the Creator of all things. He exists in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. He is totally loving and completely holy.
Sin: that sin has separated each of us from God and His purpose for our lives.
Jesus Christ: The Lord Jesus Christ as both God and man is the only One who can reconcile us to God. He lived a sinless and exemplary life, died on the cross in our place, and rose again to prove His victory and empower us for life.
Salvation: In order to receive forgiveness and the ‘new birth’ we must repent of our sins, believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and submit to His will for our lives.
Holy Spirit: In order to live the holy and fruitful lives that God intends for us, we need to be baptized in water and be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit enables us to use spiritual gifts, including speaking in tongues.
Church: Hillsong believes in the power and significance of the Church and the necessity of believers to meet regularly together for fellowship, prayer and the ‘breaking of bread’.
Other things they believe in include:
- God has individually equipped us so that we can successfully achieve His purpose for our lives which is to worship God, fulfill our role in the Church and serve the community in which we live.
- God wants to heal and transform us so that we can live healthy and blessed lives in order to help others more effectively.
- Our eternal destination of either Heaven or hell is determined by our response to the Lord Jesus Christ.
- Lord Jesus Christ is coming back again as He promised.

Hillsong Church Scandal 2022
Brian Houston, the Australian co-founder and global senior pastor of the megachurch Hillsong, was accused of covering up his father’s sexual abuse of a child in the 1970s earlier this year.
Houston “knew information relating to the sexual abuse of a young male in the 1970s and failed to bring that information to the attention of police,” according to Australian police, who have been looking into the matter since 2019.
Through a church representative, Houston denied the allegations, saying to Vanity Fair, “These charges have come as a shock to me given how transparent I’ve always been about this matter. I vehemently declare my innocence and will vigorously contest these allegations, and I appreciate the chance to correct the record.
Houston failed to report that his father had admitted to him in 1999 that he had sexually abused a young boy in the 1970s, according to a 2014 finding by an Australian royal commission. It is believed that Frank Houston, a pastor who started an Australian church in 1977 and passed away in 2004, sexually abused at least nine children.
The church has experienced a number of vile scandals recently. Houston let go Carl Lentz in November after news of his marital infidelity dominated the tabloids. Lentz, is the pastor who elevated Hillsong to new heights of fame through his connections to pop stars like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. He was charged in May with sexually abusing his former nanny, a Hillsong pastor. A charge Lentz disputes.
However, in the light of all scandals, Houston stepped down in March 2022 as the senior pastor of Hillsong church.
