Israel Houghton is an American singer, songwriter, producer, and worship leader who specializes in contemporary Christian music. He is popular as Israel & New Breed.

Biography

Israel Houghton was born in Oceanside, California on May 19, 1971. His Mother, Margaret Houghton, was white while his biological father was Black. When his mother got pregnant with him at 17, her parents had a difficult time dealing with it. She was a very talented pianist who had her whole future before her.

Her family had suggested an abortion which she declined and opted to keep the baby instead. When she was eight months pregnant, her and my father split up.

Isreal met his grandfather for the first time at the age of 7. Unfortunately his grandfather did not accept him. He recounts how his grandfather pushed him down.

Today, Israel Houghton is an accomplished American Christian music recording artist, songwriter, producer, worship leader, multi-instrumentalist, and recipient of a Grammy award. He founded the music group and ministry organization known as “Israel & New Breed,” which has released records that have sold well.

Family Life

Meleasa Houghton was Israel’s  first wife. The couple worked together on music and their ministry. The duo were married from 1994 but got divorced in 2016. Israel remarried in 2016 and, he married Adrienne Bailon.

Israel Houghton Sonny, Jordan Houghton, Mariah Houghton, Milan Houghton are his children. He recently welcomed a baby boy, Ever James Houghton, with Adrienne.

Career

Houghton made the decision to focus exclusively on the worship ministry in 1989. Together with his wife Meleasa and a group of musicians and singers, he founded the “New Breed Ministry” in 1995. This group’s primary mission was to break through denominational and cultural barriers. To get the ‘Ministry’s’ potent sound inside the churches, the group went on tour around the US.

With the song “Whisper it Loud,” he launched his recording career in 1997. Israel & New Breed published their debut album, “New Season,” in 2001. It was also their first album on the label “Sony.”

They released the album “Real” in 2002, then “Live from Another Level” came out in 2004.

He worked on Michael Gungor’s 2003 debut album, “Bigger than My Imagination,” which was a contemporary praise musician. The album was favorably praised, and one of the greatest worship albums of the year, according to a review in “Christianity Today.”

They performed for an audience of 8,000 people in Cape Town, where they recorded another live album called “Alive in South Africa.” In 2006, Houghton released the holiday album “Timeless Christmas.”  A Deeper Level, which debuted on September 4, 2007, came after this.

He released “The Power of One,” his debut studio album, in 2009. Songs like “Power of One,” “Everywhere I Go,” and “Moving Forward,” which are all already fan favorites, are included. “Everywhere I Go” is about the relationship between the Lord and the faithful.

There are several catchy songs on the album, including “You Found Me,” “Every Prayer,” a powerful gospel ballad with Mary Mary, and the danceable song “Just Wanna Say.”
’Love God, Love People’ was released on August 31, 2010, and ‘London Sessions’ was also brought out during the same year. A two-disk, 26-track career overview compilation album, ‘Decade,’ was released on March 5, 2012. A live album, ‘Jesus at the Center,’ was brought out on August 14, 2012. The group’s tour through Asia in 2015 was recorded in the live album, ‘Covered: Alive in Asia.’
 His own record company, Integrity, published 11 of his total 13 albums.

Awards/Achievements

Houghton has received 11 “Dove Awards” and 2 “Stellar Awards”   Additionally, he has won all six “Grammy” awards, including three times for his album “A Deeper Level” in 2000, once for “Power of One” in 2010, and once for “Love God, Love People” in 2011.

For his album “Alive in South Africa,” he won the “Grammy” for “Best Traditional Gospel Album” in 2007. His song “Your Presence Is Heaven” was nominated for a “Grammy” in 2013 for “Best Contemporary Christian Song” (in a tie).

His album “Covered: Alive in Asia” in 2015 got The Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album.
