Janice Gaines (née: Reddick😉 is a Stellar Award and GMA Dove Award-nominated American urban contemporary gospel singer and songwriter.

Biography

Gaines was born Janice Patrice Reddick on May 22, 1981, in St. Louis, Missouri, but was raised in Memphis, Tennessee. She grew up in a family of five, and she is the second child. Her elder brother is also a singer and a songwriter.

Gaines grew up singing in church, where her father, Lawrence Lewis Reddick III, was a Methodist minister and her mother, Jacquelyn Reddick-Jones (née Merriwether), was a singer-songwriter and musician; she also has a brother, Jon.As a teenager, Gaines was the youngest member of the Memphis-based community choir O’Landa Draper & The Associates.

Her debut singles, “Wait On You” and “The Break-Up Song,” were released as an extended play album on April 14, 2015. Her debut album, “Greatest Life Ever,” released on Motown Gospel, was produced by GRAMMY Award-winning producer LaShawn Daniels and debuted in the Top 10 on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart.

Gaines studied at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, where she performed backup vocals for R&B performer Howard Hewett.
Gaines went on to graduate from Ashland Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity before relocating to New York City to teach seventh-grade math in the Bronx.

Janice Gaines’ husband’s name is Erik Justin Gaines. She and her spouse currently live in Franklin, Tennessee with their two sons. They originally met at a Math Science Camp when they were 15 years old.

Music career

Janice Gaines started touring the country as a member of the Worship Team for Women of Faith, in 2010. Following the release of her debut single, “One Day,” in 2012, Gaines drew the notice of Motown Gospel president,  Ken Pennell. It was Ken Pennell who eventually signed her to a recording contract.

Janice Gaines appeared on the Motown Christmas CD in December 2014, singing a duet with GRAMMY Award-nominated R&B/soul singer Kem (singer) on the song “Bethlehem.”

In 2015, Motown Gospel released two singles from Janice Gaines– “Wait On You” and “The Break-Up Song”. “Wait On You” peaked at No. 21 on Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs chart. Her debut album, Greatest Life Ever, produced by GRAMMY Award-winning producer LaShawn Daniels, was released on October 9, 2015, and debuted at No. 7 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart.

The award-winning singer/songwriter, was ready to take a short pause after the release of her debut album to start a family with her husband. But when she and her son nearly died during childbirth, her life took a detour as the Lord began to shape her in ways she never expected. Gaines was forced to delay her return to music due to postpartum depression. In the end, it was a return to her spiritual and musical foundations that allowed her to reconnect with God and go on.

Janice Gaines received her first GMA Dove Award nomination in 2016 for her debut single, “Wait On You,” in the category of Contemporary Gospel/Urban Recorded Song of the Year.  Gaines received her first Stellar Award nomination for Contemporary Female Vocalist of the Year in 2017.
