Biography

McReynolds was born Jonathan Caleb McReynolds on September 17, 1989, in Chicago, Illinois. He was raised by a single mother with the love and support of his family, church members, and pastor at the New Original Church of God in Christ. He was a gifted child who learnt to play the drums at the age of five, the piano at the age of eight, and performed regularly as a church musician. To say the least, he was a reluctant singer. However, he began to come out of his shell in high school, eventually sharing his abilities with the public rather than singing alone in his living room.Today, McReynolds is a renowned gospel artist with several awards and nominations.

McReynolds founded Elihu Nation, a non-profit organization that aims to “celebrate, promote, and work to create young seekers and models of wisdom.” It has hosted multiple Christian scholarship and self-help programs and has given out at least $30,000 in college scholarships.

In 2018, McReynolds was inducted into Mensa, an international society for people with high IQs, and was made an honorary member of Alpha Nu Omega, Inc., an international Christian fraternity.

He went to Whitney Young Magnet High School, where he not only became known for his musical abilities, but also learned how to record and create songs as part of the school’s podcast effort. He later earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Columbia College. In 2015, he received a master’s degree in Biblical studies from Moody Theological Seminary.

Career

His music career began in 2012, with the release of Life Music by Light Records and Entertainment One Music on September 25, 2012. This was his breakout record on the Billboard charts, charting at No. 98 on the Billboard 200, No. 3 on the Gospel Albums chart, and No. 23 on the Independent Albums chart. His viral hit “No Gray” garnered him TV appearances on BET’s Celebration of Gospel and fans in India Arie and Nicki Minaj.

McReynolds’ second album, Life Music: Stage Two, was nominated for a Grammy Award, charted at No. 1 on the Billboard Gospel chart for four weeks, and was a GMA Dove Award winner.
