Pastor Joyce teaches us in this message about being burned and not bitter. When God told us to forgive our enemies and forget how badly they have treated us, he meant it. When we don’t forgive and do what he told us to do, we hurt ourselves, but when we do it, we see God’s favor in our lives and the rewards he brings his reward.We have experienced a lot in our lives: being lied to, deceived, cheated on, mistreated, and so on. We have to learn how to let go of all those hurts. We have really done a lot for somebody, and when we needed them, they pretended not to have any time for us. If we are expecting someone to pay back the good things we did for them, we are not actually giving with our whole heart. We have to learn to give without expecting anything in return from them. The example we have to look at is Joseph and how he forgave his brothers after everything they did to him. Everyone is not going to be nice to us, but we can decide if we want to be bitter or not. When we hold unforgiveness in our hearts, we become bitter. We don’t have to go around being bitter. God wants us to forgive because when we do so, we free ourselves from bitterness and start to see his blessings and favor in our lives. Joseph’s story is so amazing. His brothers were jealous of him because he was dad’s baby; they sold him off, but after all the hurts he had been through, he found it in his heart to forget. We have to find it in our hearts to forgive people, no matter what they have done.
We don’t have control over how people are going to treat us, but we do have control over how we are going to react. As Christians, we are to behave differently from the rest of the world. We are God’s representatives, and we are to show God’s personality in everything that we do.
