Matt Redman  is an English Christian worship leader, singer-songwriter and author. Redman is an accomplished artist, he has released 16 albums, written 8 books, and helped start three church-plants. Redman is also a respected author, having written books on worship, prayer, and the Christian life. His writing is known for its depth and insight, drawing from his own experiences as a worship leader and follower of Christ. Biography

Matthew James Redman was born and raised in the English town of Watford. When he was about two years old, his family relocated to Chorleywood, a small commuter town. His father died when he was seven years old, leaving him and his brother to be raised primarily by his mother.

His mother then remarried into an abusive relationship, which wreaked havoc on the family. After that, there was a third marriage, which unfortunately ended in divorce. He became a Christian at the age of ten after witnessing a mission service led by Luis Palau at London’s QPR football stadium, and he was encouraged to lead worship in his teens by Mike Pilavachi, an Anglican church youth leader.

Redman became a Christian at the age of ten and began attending the Anglican church of St Andrew’s Chorleywood in Hertfordshire. He started to play the guitar there, and by the age of 20, he was conducting worship services and releasing his first record. Along with his pastor Mike Pilavachi, Redman co-founded Soul Survivor, a global Christian movement and yearly music festival focused towards teenagers, in 1993. From 1994 to 2002, Redman was the worship leader of Soul Survivor Church in Watford, England.

Career

In January and February 1994, Matt recorded his debut album, Wake Up My Soul, at ICC Studios. Martin Smith produced the album, which featured an excellent lineup of Christian musicians including Iona’s Mike Haughton, drummer Martin Neil, Split Level’s Adrian Thompson, Helen Burgess, and Les Moir on bass.

In 2002, Redman co-wrote the Dove Award-winning “Blessed Be Your Name” (Worship Song of the Year) with his wife Beth, as well as the Grammy Award-nominated “Our God.” Matt and Beth have since collaborated on some of Redman’s most hit songs, including “You Never Let Go,” “Face Down,” and “Let My Words Be Few.”

Redman recorded his 2011 live CD, 10,000 Reasons, with Chris Tomlin, Louie Giglio, Nathan and Christy Nockels, and others at LIFT – A Worship Leader Collective in February 2011. The title single of Redman’s new album, “10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord),” debuted at the top of the Billboard Christian Songs list on July 28, 2012, and remained there for 13 weeks. It was his first No. 1 hit on Christian Contemporary radio in the United States. The song went on to win two Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Christian Music Song and Best Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music Performance, as well as being certified Gold by the RIAA in 2018.

He  has also won thirteen Gospel Music Association’s Dove Awards.

Matt Redman and LZ7, a Manchester-based Christian rap and urban music combo, released the song “Twenty Seven Million” on February 27, 2012, to raise awareness for the anti-human trafficking fight. The single peaked at No. 12 on the UK Singles Chart. Redman performed with the band abroad to raise awareness for the topic through worship.

Several contemporary Christian music (CCM) musicians have covered Redman’s songs, including Matt Maher, Michael W. Smith, Jeremy Camp, Rebecca St. James, Chris Tomlin, David Crowder Band, Tree63, Kutless, Stellar Kart, and Hillsong United. He frequently works with other Christian musicians such as Chris Tomlin and Tim Hughes.

Redman stated in 2019 that he had signed with Integrity Music, with new music due out in late 2019, and a new album due out in 2020.

He has written and edited several publications on Christian worship, including The Unquenchable Worshipper and the book Facedown, which was released to coincide with the album of the same name. He and his wife co-wrote the book “Blessed Be Your Name” in the intention of inspiring others to accept God and his goodness regardless of the circumstances.

He married Beth Redman, who is also a songwriter and author. The couple has five children.

After a sabbatical in America to record Where Angels Fear to Tread, Redman relocated to Brighton in 2002. In 2004, he and his wife joined The Point, a new church plant in West Sussex led by pastor Will Kemp.

Redman, his wife Beth, and their three children relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, in 2008, to assist in the establishment of Passion City Church with Louie Giglio and Chris Tomlin. They returned to the United Kingdom with their children in August 2010.
