Biography

Adams was born on May 4, 1953, as the preacher’s daughter. Adams grew up listening to gospel music, and it became second nature to her. Her family relocated to Yakima, Washington, when she was little, and this is frequently given as her birthplace.
Her musical career began in the church.

She suffered a lot of rejection before she had the chance to perform. She relocated to Los Angeles, California, in the 1970s and recorded a demo tape. Several music execs, however, were only interested in dance music, rather than Adams’ preferred sound.

Adams moved to Kansas City, Missouri, on the advice of her singing coach, Lee Farrell, and worked a variety of local gigs.
She began her career in the early 1980s with two self-financed albums that were met with limited success.

Oleta Adams sang the National Anthem prior to Game Two of the 1984 American League Championship Series.

Career

Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, the founders of the English band Tears for Fears, discovered Adams in 1985 while she was performing in the Peppercorn Duck Club at the Hyatt Hotel in Kansas City during their US tour. Soon after, Adams stopped performing in hotels and began looking for other work. Orzabal and Smith approached her in 1987 and invited her to join their band as a singer and pianist on their next album, The Seeds of Love. She attended two sessions a year later while touring the Nordic nations.

The album was published in 1989, and the single “Woman in Chains,” performed as a duet by Adams and Orzabal with Phil Collins on drums, became her first hit. In 1990, Adams embarked on a world tour with Tears For Fears, appearing as a supporting artist at the start of each event and remaining onstage throughout the Tears For Fears set, providing piano and vocals.

During her time with Tears For Fears, Adams was approached by their label, Fontana Records, and began her solo career in 1990. She worked with Orzabal, who co-produced her latest album, Circle of One, after meeting with a number of producers.
After scoring her biggest hit to date with a Grammy nominated cover of Brenda Russell’s “Come Here,” the album gained critical acclaim and eventually reached at No. 1 in the UK Albums Chart in 1991. The song entered the top 5 in the UK and the US and became famous during the 1991 Gulf War battle, when families of deployed troops in the region adopted it as a theme song.

Adams also signed with Fairwood Music, an independent music publisher, in 1991, and contributed to the Elton John/Bernie Taupin tribute album Two Rooms, which featured her version of John’s 1974 smash “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me.
Adams’ version was a top 40 smash in the United Kingdom.

Her next album, Evolution (1993), was similarly a commercial success, reaching the top ten in the United Kingdom. It also included her own adult contemporary single “Window of Hope.”  Adams’ 1995 CD, Moving On, saw her lean further toward R&B, and she also reconnected with Roland Orzabal for the duet “Me and My Huge Ideas” on the same year’s Tears For Fears album, Raoul and the Kings of Spain. Two years later, she released the Christian-themed album “Come Walk with Me“, for which she received a Grammy nomination in 1997 for “Holy Is the Lamb.” She sang as a guest vocalist on Phil Collins’ Big Band Jazz Tour in 1998.

In 2001, Adams released her sixth album, All the Love, a return to an R&B/Adult contemporary sound. The album was re-released in 2004 in Germany with a different title “I Can’t Live a Day without You“.  However, in 2004, Adams reunited with Tears for Fears once again as she made a surprise guest appearance onstage at their Kansas City concert, performing “Woman in Chains”.

On October 3, 2006, Adams released her first Christmas album, entitled Christmas Time with Oleta. Also, on April 21, 2009, Adams released her eighth album titled “Let’s Stay Here”. On February 10, 2017, Adams released her ninth album, her first album in eight years, titled “Third Set”.  Adams has been nominated for four Grammy Awards, as well as two Soul Train Music Awards.
