Today we share you this sermon by Pastor Jentezen Franklin titled “Why Water Baptism?” and it is a sermon that will uplift you and inspire you. In this message, Pastor Franklin points out the two mistakes we make when it comes to water baptism.
There are those who say that baptism in water is not a big deal because your salvation does not depend on it. On the other hand there are those on the extreme who say that you cannot be saved unless you are baptized in water. Neither of them is correct.
The first thing Jesus did in his early ministry was to get baptized in water, and it was until he did that the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit came down like a dove. The first thing Jesus did in his earthly ministry was to model water baptism to us. Also the last ting he he did after he rose from the dead was to go to heaven to intercede for us at the right hand of the father.
Jesus’ last word in Matthew 28 was “Go into the world and preach the gospel to all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, son and the Holy Spirit”. Therefore the last Jesus said is “I want you to get baptized”. It is not right that we try to minimize what Jesus emphasized.
Pastor Franklin points out that the reason most people do not get baptized is because it is not convenient. It was not convenient for Jesus but he had to travel all the way from Nazereth to Jordan to get baptized.
The truth is that there will never be a convenient time for you to get baptized. Sometimes, God does not want i to be convenient. Just like the instruction of Prophet Elisha to Naaman, God is saying “Do It My Way If You Want Results”. God does not want to make it convenient so that he can kill the pride in us.
One reason why we should get baptized can be found in Romans 6:3. When we are baptized into Christ, we are baptized unto his death. In God’s eyes, you are having a funeral for your old self and the only person that is grieving is the devil.
Another reason for baptism is that it proclaims your identification with Jesus Christ publicly. It is just like the wedding ring that say “I belong to Jesus”.
There is nothing magical in the water that makes you saved but it identifies with the fact that you belong to Jesus. It is all about going public with the fact that Jesus is your Lord and Saviour.
