Pastor Toure Roberts Reflects on the Importance of Healthy Self-Esteem
Pastor Toure Roberts recently shared a thought-provoking message on the importance of healthy self-esteem. He stated that the post was inspired by a compliment from his wife, Pastor Sarah Jakes Roberts. In his post, he recounted how his wife admired his “high self-esteem,” which initially caught him off-guard due to his aversion to arrogance and hubris.
Pastor Roberts explained that while he knew he was confident, he questioned whether having high self-esteem was equivalent to being prideful. This reflection led him to consider the alternative: low self-esteem. He realized that low self-esteem is devastating and debilitating, robbing many of the self-love and self-worth necessary for a fulfilling life.
“Having high self-esteem is a much better option,” he concluded. However, he also acknowledged the potential pitfalls of high self-esteem, emphasizing the need to differentiate between healthy self-esteem and destructive pride. He identified two key qualifiers:
1. The basis of one’s high self-esteem.
2. The lens through which one views others as a result of it.
Pastor Roberts shared that his self-esteem is firmly rooted in his faith, specifically in the belief that he is created in God’s image, redeemed through His Son, and called to live a life of impact and service. This foundation, he explained, helps him maintain a balanced perspective and fosters a deep appreciation for the potential within every individual.
He further highlighted that recognizing God’s love for everyone helps ground his view of others, preventing pride and encouraging a genuine fascination with human potential. “The highest honor God could bestow upon us was to replicate Himself in us. Therefore, suffice it to say, if God esteems me (and you) highly, who are we to disagree?” he concluded.
Pastor Roberts’ message serves as a reminder of the importance of healthy self-esteem rooted in faith and the positive impact it can have on one’s view of themselves and others.
