Pope Francis Appeals for Cyclone-wrecked African Countries

Pope Francis appeals for Malawi and other South African countries amid devastating Tropical Cyclone Freddy. The head of the Catholic Church as usual showed his concern towards the flood victims of some South African countries. According to a Vatican News report, the Vatican had prayed for the people of Malawi, recalling the destruction perpetrated by the Cyclone. This was during his General Audience on Wednesday morning in the Vatican.

Again, Pope Francis took to his Twitter on Thursday to pray not only for Malawi but also for the countries of  Mozambique and South Africa who were equally affected by the disaster. In his tweet, he stated that he is close to the people of affected countries. Furthermore, he implored individuals to pray along with him for the victims of the disaster.

“I am close to the people of Malawi, of Mozambique, and of South Africa, who have been struck in recent days by a powerful cyclone. Let us pray together for the deceased, the injured, and the displaced. May the Lord sustain the families and communities most affected by this disaster” He wrote.

One of the longest-lasting tropical cyclones in history struck extensively Malawi, parts of Mozambique, and South Africa earlier this week. Cyclone Freddy triggered floods and mudslides affecting a startling statistics of more than 900,000 persons. It reportedly claimed lives and damaged properties while leaving thousands displaced and missing. Reports from Shepherd Bushiri who visited the affected areas in Malawi had it that over 300 people had died. He confirmed also that while over 200 were missing, between 9,000 and 11,000 had been displaced. He added that the disaster affected over 140,000 people.

Indeed this disaster is heartbreaking. It’s however very thoughtful of Pope Francis to Pray for these countries. We hope God comes through for them.
