Rev. Dr. Howard-John Wesley Biography

Dr. Howard-John Wesley was born on April 19, 1972. He was born into the family of the late Rev. Dr. Alvin J. Wesley and Dr. Helene J. Wesley. He is the fourth generation in his family to be a Baptist pastor.

Wesley is a 1994 Duke University magna cum laude graduate with a double degree in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering. He surrendered to God’s call once more after his first year of medical school and stepped away from a medical career to attend seminary.

He majored in Biblical Studies and African-American religious history at Boston University School of Theology, where he was a Martin L. King, Jr. Scholar and a 1997 summa-cum-laude alumnus.

His zeal for preaching and learning led him to the Associated Chicago Theological School’s Doctor of Ministry in Preaching Program, from which he received his Doctor of Ministry degree from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2003.

He has served as an adjunct professor at Hartford Seminary, Boston University, and Virginia Theological Seminary. He is currently a member of the Virginia Union University Board of Trustees and Vice-Chairman of the John Leland Center for Theological Studies and the Duke Divinity School Board of Visitors. Also, he is on the Board of Directors of the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Missionary Convention.

Pastor Howard-John Wesley is the eighth pastor in the church’s 217-year history of worshipping Christ while serving humankind.

The Alfred Street Baptist Church has expanded from 2,800 to 10,000 members, with 60,000+ monthly online viewers and 80 active ministries, thanks to Dr. Wesley’s excellent leadership. His focus is on children’s ministries and missions,

The church performs four-weekend worship sessions, including one on Saturday night, because of the capacity.

Dr. Wesley is in high demand as a worship leader, conference speaker, and revivalist. Former President Barack Obama has worshipped with the family at Alfred Street Baptist Church on multiple Easter Sundays and he became a fan of his preaching.

Awards

The Root, recognized Rev. Dr. Howard-John Wesley twice (2013 and 2016) as one of the top 100 most influential African Americans in the nation.

In 2016, he received the NAACP’s Chairman’s Award for his work in social justice at the 47th Annual NAACP Image Awards.

The Rainbow PUSH Coalition Trombone honored Dr. Wesley in 2017 for his work in the ministry as an engaged clergy. They gave him the award during the Rainbow Push Coalition’s Annual Media and Telecom Symposium in Washington, DC.

In 2019, Dr. Wesley received 89.2% of the vote for The Laurel Wreath Award which is the highest award available to a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He is the second-youngest member of this fraternal organization to receive this award whereas Arthur Ashe, Jr. is the youngest. They conferred Dr. Wesley with the award at the 85th Kappa Conclave in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2021.
