Robert Fergusson Sermons An Unusual Citizenship

The bible is filled with ordinary people, doing ordinary things but filled with the extraordinary. The early Christians were ordinary people but they had extraordinary citizenship. Can that be said for you today? In John 16:33, the bible points to our unusual citizenship – “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Jesus also tell us this in John 17:15 – My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.
The above prayer of Jesus is what ought to be said about us. The bible tell us that when we become Christians we are moved from one kingdom to another (Colossians 1:13-14). We were in the kingdom of darkness and God moved us. When we become Christians we change king and kingdoms. However, we are still a part of this world and this does not make us immune to troubles. However, one thing is that God is going to treat us differently because we are different.
There are three things we can draw from the story of the Joseph and his brothers.
1. God had a plan that is bigger than his people. This is the word of the Lord in Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
2. God has a place for the people of God. 1 Corinthians 12:27 – Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. How will you find your place? Go to church and find your place.
3. God has a promise for the people of God. God has promised that he will deal differently wtih you even if the whole world is falling apart.
