Robert Morris Son-In Law, Ethan Fisher, Renames Gateway Church Houston
Ethan Fisher, the son-in-law of Gateway Church founder Robert Morris, has announced that Gateway Church Houston is changing its name to Newlands Church.
This decision comes in the wake of the ongoing scandal surrounding Morris’s recent sexual abuse allegations.
Fisher, who co-leads the church with Morris’s daughter Elaine, made the announcement during a Sunday service. The renaming coincides with the church’s “Summer at Gateway” series, where a message titled “All Things New” was delivered.
In the service video available on YouTube, Fisher explained that the decision to change the church’s name was not driven by external pressure but by a sense of inner peace and a belief that God was calling them to something new. He emphasized that the new name was a prophetic declaration of the church’s future.
“We are not here to be moved by pressure from outside but the peace of God that is with us on the inside and I believe that during this season, as a church, that God is once again calling us into something new, and I simply want to follow,” Fisher, told his congregation.
“We believe the Lord has given us a new name. This next chapter is about obedience and stepping out in faith to be who God has called us to be. In Scripture, when God changed a name He was speaking prophetically to who that person was to become.”
“I believe today God is speaking to us to look forward to who we are to become. I am excited to announce that Gateway Houston is becoming Newlands Church,” Fisher said in the video.
Fisher explained that the decision was supported by his wife, Elaine, and the church elders. He expressed “hope and expectation that God has amazing things in store” for the church.”
“I believe God has been speaking this to us, me and Elaine, uh even the elders, as we have talked and prayed during this season,” he revealed.
