Times Square Church
David Wilkerson started the Times Square Church in 1987. Times Square was then recognized as a hub for X-rated movies, strip clubs, prostitution, and drug abuse. In response to what he perceived as “the physically destitute and spiritually dead individuals” among the pimps, runaways, and crack dealers that inhabited the region, Wilkerson opened the church.
For a brief period, the Times Square Church had services in Manhattan’s Town Hall on 43rd Street, followed by the Nederlander Theatre on 41st Street.
The church rented out the former Mark Hellinger Theatre in 1989. In 1991, Times Square Church paid an undisclosed sum to acquire the structure from the Nederlander Organization.
The building was valued at between $15 million and $18 million at the time. David Wilkerson, his brother Donald Wilkerson, and Robert Phillips were listed as the three pastors of the church, which was classified as an evangelical Pentecostal congregation. The church’s current location on 51st Street remains the theater.
Carter Conlon, a former evangelical pastor from eastern Canada who served as an associate pastor at Times Square Church from 1994 to 2001, was given the position of senior pastor by David Wilkerson in 2001.
Additionally, missionaries and visiting pastors from all over the world come to preach in the church. Prayer is prioritized, and there is even a “prayer during preaching ministry.” Programs to teach the love and truth of God’s Word are also available for high school students and young adults.
