Pope Francis Declares October 6 Global Day of Prayer for Peace

The Catholic church head, Pope Francis has called for a global day of prayer and fasting for peace on October 7 to mark the one-year anniversary of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The announcement was made after holy mass for the opening of the second session of the General Assembly of the Synod in St Peter’s Square on October 2.

“In this dramatic hour of our history,” the Pope said, according to Vatican news. “while the winds of war and the fires of violence continue to devastate entire peoples and nations,” the Christian community is reminded of its call to “put itself at the service of humanity.”

Pope also announced his plan to visit Rome’s Basilica of St. Mary Major on October 6. He invited all the over 400 synod members to accompany him.

During the personal visit, the Holy Father will pray the rosary, seeking the intercession of the virgin Mary for peace.

“Let us walk together,” the Pope urged. “Let us listen to the Lord. And let us be led by the breeze of the Spirit.”

Since his election as the 266th pope to lead the Church, Pope Francis has become a globally popular figure, admired for his humility, compassion, and commitment to peace. He has championed issues like poverty reduction, environmental protection, and interfaith dialogue.

The Holy Father has consistently united global believers in prayer during times of crisis, such as the Russia-Ukraine War and the Israel-Hamas conflict.

In 2023, at the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict, he initiated a global day of prayer and fasting on October 27, hoping to foster an end to the violence.

He extended this call not only to Christians but also to individuals of all faiths and those who prioritize peace, inviting them to participate in an hour of prayer and penance. He aimed to seek divine intervention for a more peaceful world.

Despite this Pope’s constant pleas for peace he has also had his share of challenges. Under his leadership, the church has faced criticism regarding its handling of clergy sex abuse scandals and its stance on the blessing of same-sex couples.

Despite the challenges, Pope Francis remains a powerful voice for peace and understanding.
