For David himself said by the Holy Spirit: “The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool.’”
Mark 12:36

In seventeenth-century London, convicted criminals were often branded on the right thumb in lieu of a more severe sentence. If they were ever accused of another crime, the judge would force them to “raise their right hand” to provide evidence of a previous conviction or leniency. After branding was abolished, the practice of raising the right hand in court continued as a means of swearing to truthfulness when testifying or swearing an oath.

Centuries before, the right hand was a symbol of power, authority, and truth—it is mentioned more than sixty times in Scripture. Though God has no physical hands, His “hand” is often associated with power (Isaiah 50:2; Habakkuk 3:4) and authority (Matthew 20:21; 22:44; 26:64). So when Jesus told the religious leaders of His day that His followers had been given to Him by God and that no one could “snatch them out of [His] hand” (John 10:28-29), He was saying that He had the power and authority to save all who came to Him.

If you belong to Jesus, no power in heaven or earth can separate you from Him (Romans 8:38-39).

God never promises us an easy time. Just a safe arrival.
