Kay Warren (born Elizabeth Kay Lewis) was born on February 9, 1954. Warren was born in San Diego, California, to Reverend B. LaVern and Bobbie Lewis. She attended California Baptist College (now University) in Riverside, California and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University, Los Angeles in 1976.

Kay Warren is a prominent Christian author, speaker, and advocate for mental health. She  and her husband Rick gained significant recognition after Rick’s book “The Purpose Driven Life” became a bestseller and had a widespread impact on the Christian community worldwide.

Kay has also been actively involved in various philanthropic and advocacy efforts, particularly in the areas of HIV/AIDS awareness and mental health. She co-founded the HIV/AIDS Initiative at Saddleback Church and has been a vocal advocate for reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

Kay is married to Rick Warren, who is the co-founder of Saddleback Church. After being married to Rick Warren, Kay gave birth to three children: son Matthew Warren (born July 18, 1985), daughter Amy Warren Hilliker (born 1979), and son Joshua Warren (born 1981).

Ministry

Pastor Warren is the co-founder of the sixth-largest evangelical megachurch in the United States, Saddleback Church. The ministry is headquartered in Lake Forest, California.

In 1980, Saddleback Church began as a Bible study group with just seven members. On Easter Sunday of the same year, the inaugural service was held at a high school gym. 22,000 individuals attended the church in 2017.

At Saddleback Church, Kay started the HIV/AIDS and orphan care programs in 2004. Warren and her husband brought together the commercial and governmental sectors with the religious community through civil forums and international summits on HIV/AIDS to advance HIV prevention, treatment, and care as well as advocate for orphaned children.

President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, First Daughter Jenna Bush, Senators Hillary Clinton and John McCain, Bono, Ambassador Mark Dybul, United States Global AIDS Coordinator, and Dr. Peter Piot, director of UNAIDS, were among the special guests who spoke at these events.

After her son Matthew committed suicide in 2013, Warren started to promote mental health awareness and suicide prevention. In addition to being a member of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention’s executive committee board, Kay launched the Hope for Mental Health Initiative at Saddleback Church in 2014.

Warren was named on the Orange County Register’s 100 Most Influential People List in 2016.

In 2022, Kay and her Husband, pastor Rick Warren retired from the leadership of  Saddleback Church which they have led for 40 years, handing over the mantle of leadership to Pastor Andy Wood and his wife.
