Revealing some details about his friend Kirk Franklin, Pastor John Gray took to Instagram to write:
“It was 1995. I had hair on my head and dreams in my heart. I was trying to find my way to purpose while attending the University of Cincinnati and working at a homeless shelter. My forever sister Dionne Rhodes calls me out of the blue and says “Do you want to audition for a traveling play?” I said of course! She gets a guy named @davidetalbert on the phone and I do an impression of Charles Fold. Old school gospel legend. He sends me a plane ticket to Dallas and got the job!
The star of that play was a guy named @kirkfranklin. He got married 3 months after we met to @iamtammyfranklin and the rest is literally history. He’s one of my best friends. But more so he’s one of the best men I know. His love for God, his wife and kids, God’s people-and his unrivaled artistry. He is a once in a generation gift to the Body of Christ and the world. I am honored to say I was in the room when he wrote some of the songs that we still sing today-and will sing until Jesus comes back. He won’t like this post because it isn’t goofy and stupid like we usually are-but life is short.
Tell people you love them while you can. He opened doors for me. He invited in to his blessings. And I’ll never forget it. My first time on @tbn was because of Kirk. Don’t forget the people who paved the way for you. So happy birthday brother. I love you. And May God give you more years to bless more people. And May your songs-like your new hairline-be eternal! (I HAD to get one in) ”
