Pope Francis Marks 11 Years Since His Election to the Papacy

Today, the Roman Catholic head, Pope Francis, marks his 11th year since his election as the 266th pope to lead the Church.

The Argentine-born pontiff has become a globally popular figure, admired for his humility, compassion, and commitment to peace. He has championed issues like poverty reduction, environmental protection, and interfaith dialogue.

His reign, however, has also seen its share of challenges. The Church has faced criticism regarding its handling of clergy sex abuse scandals and its stance on the blessing of same-sex couples. Pope Francis has also navigated complex geopolitical situations and internal reforms within the Church.

Despite the challenges, Pope Francis remains a powerful voice for peace and understanding. Throughout his eleventh year of pontificate, the only backdrop to his statements has been the hope for peace.

As the 87-year-old pontiff enters his twelfth year as pope, speculation swirls about the future of his papacy. His health has been a concern in recent months, leading some to wonder how long he will continue his leadership.

In a recent viral video, the pope could be seen unable to get on his popemobile at the end of his weekly audience. Another video also shows him struggling to climb steps before the weekly audience.

Notwithstanding the speculation, Catholics worldwide observe the Holy Father’s anniversary today. In the spirit of celebration, the Vatican shared a message on Instagram honoring the pope’s anniversary.

“Happy 11th anniversary of your election to the papacy, Pope Francis,” the post read. Accompanied by the message is a video of some remarkable moments with the Pope, including appeals for peace in Ukraine  and the celebrated World Youth Day in Portugal.”
