VaShawn Mitchell is an American gospel artist and song writer. He has a track record of producing numerous award-winning projects, he has contributed to the success of Grammy Award recipients such as Vanessa Bell Armstrong and Smokie Norful.

Early Life

Born on November 19, 1976, in Harvey, Illinois, Vashawn Mitchell discovered his passion for music at a young age. Raised in a family with a rich musical heritage, he began honing his skills as a singer and songwriter from his formative years. Mitchell’s upbringing in the church instilled in him a deep-rooted connection to gospel music, shaping the trajectory of his career.

Career

Mitchell served as the Minister of Music at the St. Mark Baptist Church in Harvey, Illinois. His exceptional talent and unwavering dedication soon caught the attention of industry insiders, leading to collaborations with renowned artists and producers.

Breakthrough Albums:

In 2005, Mitchell released his debut album, “Promise,” which garnered widespread acclaim for its soul-stirring lyrics and captivating melodies. The album featured the hit single “My Worship Is For Real,”. This album solidified his position as a rising star in the gospel music landscape. Following the success of “Promise,” Mitchell continued to release a string of chart-topping albums. Some of which included  “Triumphant” (2010), “Created 4 This” (2012), and “Secret Place” (2016).

Mitchell was the most nominated artist at the 27th Annual Stellar Awards; receiving 11 nods and walking away with 6 statues. He was nominated for 2 Grammy Awards at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards[1] for Best Gospel Performancefor “Nobody Greater” and Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album Triumphant.

Beyond his musical achievements, Mitchell’s impact extends far beyond the realm of entertainment.

In 2012, Mitchell started the Norman Youth and Arts Foundation, named in memory of his grandfather. The Foundation sponsors summer youth camps for the arts in the Chicago area. Mitchell is also one of the only Gospel artists active with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Foundation.

On December 31, 2016, Mount Zion Baptist Church announced that VaShawn Mitchell as the General Overseer of Music & Worship Arts.

Mitchell was honored by his hometown of Harvey, Illinois when they named one of the streets in his neighborhood “VaShawn Mitchell Street.”

He is a honorary member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. inducted during the 2022 Houston Conclave of the Fraternity.
