Amy Groeschel has a very beautiful message for us which is titled “When Life Feels Empty”. The text for the message is from 1 John 2: 15.
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”
In our physical bodies, dehydration is a big problem. It comes with very miserable symptoms. It is at this point that we need extra water.
We know what to do when we have the feeling of thirst but do we know what do when our soul feels empty, and our spirit has dried up?
The natural thing we do is to look around and conclude that what we need is more time. If you are a big achiever, you may think that you need the next achievement that will make you feel that life is good.
It may also be that you are looking at a relationship and thinking that it is what you need to fulfill something in you. Sadly, there are a few of us who turn to substances, whether legal or illegal. For some people it may be over indulging in food.
According to pastor Amy, the problem is when we are living in this life filled with constant emptiness and dryness. It is because we are often trying to satisfy the hunger and thirst that are temporary.
“The World” as referenced in the text is not God’s creation as we know it, but worldliness. A worldly mind is a mind that is self-focused, self-righteous and self-indulgent. It is discontent and really concerned with honoring self and looking at people to honour us, instead of looking at God for honour and to honor him. This is the worldliness that the scripture warns us about.
When we choose to love the world, we are grasping at something that is not real. It is not life but an illusion and this illusion is a trap. It is how the enemy will bait us into things that we think can bring something but they can’t. All it brings is absolute despair, emptiness and hopelessness.
As believers, trying to grasp at these illusions makes us ineffective and unproductive. What we should be doing is cling to our saviour and living from him.
