Calvary Chapel of Downey Founder Jeff Johnson Dies at 76

The community of Calvary Chapel of Downey and countless others are mourning the loss of its founder Pastor Jeff Johnson, who passed away on February 13 after a battle with cancer.

Johnson was 76 years old and left behind a legacy of faith, compassion, and service that spanned over five decades. Calvary Chapel Magazine announced his demise in a February 14 release.

“After a lifetime of dedicated service to the Lord, Jeff Johnson, longtime pastor of Calvary Chapel Downey (CCD), CA, entered into his Master’s presence on February 13, 2024,” the release read. “Surrounded by his family singing worship songs, Jeff took the hand of His Savior, and was set free from his fight with cancer.”

Announcing Jeff’s demise and expressing her belief in the afterlife, Johnson’s wife Karynx was quoted by Chapel magazine as proclaiming “He made it!”

Jeff Johnson has been a pastor and teacher since 1973. His influence extends beyond the local church. His radio program, “Sound Doctrine,” brings his insightful teachings to a global audience. He has also traveled extensively, lecturing and preaching around the world.

The church serves its large community through various programs, including Bible classes, training programs, mission outreaches, and even a Christian school. Johnson’s wife, Karyn, plays a vital role in supporting his ministry.

Together, they have led Calvary Chapel of Downey to become a hub of spiritual growth, impacting lives not only in Southern California but also around the world. Their combined efforts however attracted over 9,000 attendees to Calvary Chapel of Downey each week.

Last November, the congregation honored Jeff and Karyn’s 50 years of faithful ministry as he handed the church leadership to Pastor Art Reyes.

Johnson’s Celebration of Life service will be announced in due time according to Calvary Magazine.
