We bring you today’s message from Pastor Creflo Dollar, which is titled “Overcoming Approval Addiction.” The text for the message is 1 Samuel 15:24. “And Saul said unto Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and thy words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.”
Pastor Dollar teaches us in this Sunday service about overcoming approval addiction in our lives. We all have been impacted or affected by the approval addiction. The fear of rejection and heaviness that those of us carry is rooted in being addicted to approval. Society is filled with a large number of addicts who are addicted to validation and approval. Prophet Samuel gave a word of the Lord to Saul; he told Saul to destroy and kill everything—animals and humans—but Saul was addicted to people. He chose to do what pleased the people instead of what pleased God. We are not to be addicted to the approval of others when it comes to God’s purpose in our lives. When we are addicted to people’s approval, we are not going to do what God designed us for.
Saul sought the people’s approval so much that he wouldn’t make a decision; no one was asking him to do anything because he was the King. It was all in his head; what he thought could happen dominated him, and his approval addiction caused him to act foolishly. We are to get approval from God, not from people, because seeking people’s approval will cause us to act foolishly and ultimately compromise our future. Many Jewish leaders believed in Jesus Christ, but they would not admit it for fear of the Pharisees. They were more concerned with having the approval of men than the approval of God. We have to know what God has called us to do and not go around seeking people’s approval. Approval addiction has far-reaching consequences in that it lowers our self-esteem and hinders our witness. It makes God’s plan for us impossible to carry out because we are addicted to people’s approval, and in the end, it’s going to cost us everything.
