Matthew Joseph West was born on April 25, 1977, in Downers Grove, Illinois. He grew up supporting the Chicago Cubs, the baseball team from his hometown, and aspired to play the game professionally. He participated in the school’s Chamber Choir and played baseball during his time at Downers Grove North High School, where he graduated as team captain. In the end, he received a four-year music scholarship at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, where he was a member of the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship chapter, in place of the collegiate baseball scholarship he had hoped for. In 1999, he received his Millikin diploma.

He was nominated for five Dove Awards in 2005, two of which were for his major-label debut album, Happy. West won the 2013 American Music Award for Best Contemporary Inspirational Artist.
He began as an independent artist in the late 1990s and put out three solo albums before joining Universal South Records.
