Biography

David Joseph Platt was born on the 11 July 1978 in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. There is very little information on his growing up or who his parents are.

On the other hand, David achieved so much at a very young age. He became the youngest pastor of one of America’s mega-churches. Also, he was Dean of Chapel and Assistant Professor of Expository Preaching and Apologetics at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Although, during Hurricane Katrina, he was serving at Edgewater Baptist Church in New Orleans when his parsonage flooded.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia and went on to complete a Master of Divinity degree, as well as a Ph.D. in New Testament Studies, from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

Platt gained significant recognition for his book “Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream,” which was published in 2010. The book challenges readers to reevaluate their understanding of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ and emphasizes a commitment to wholehearted devotion to God’s mission and purposes.

He served as the pastor of The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, Alabama, from 2006 to 2014. During his time there, he became well-known for his challenging and biblically rooted sermons that encouraged believers to live out their faith authentically and engage with global missions.

Platt was also appointed as the president of the International Mission Board (IMB) of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) in 2014. The IMB is an organization dedicated to supporting and sending missionaries to various parts of the world to spread the message of Christianity. Platt’s role as IMB president allowed him to continue his passion for missions and global outreach.

Ministry

The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, Alabama named Platt the lead pastor in 2006. He became the youngest mega-church pastor in the United States at 27.

Platt began working as a temporary teaching pastor at McLean Bible Church in Vienna, Virginia, in February 2017. He continued to serve as president of the International Mission Board during this time. Platt was named The McLean Bible Church named Platt the pastor-teacher in September of that year. He announced his resignation from the IMB in February 2018, pending the appointment of his successor.

When President Donald Trump appeared unplanned at McLean Bible Church during Sunday services on June 2, 2019, Platt prayed for him. Following that, Platt wrote a letter detailing the circumstances and his prayer, citing the biblical command to pray for people in positions of authority (1 Timothy 2:1-6) as his inspiration.

David is also the founder of a resource ministry, with the name “Radical.net”.
