John Fullerton MacArthur Jr. was born on June 19, 1939. He came from a Christian background as his grandfather, Harry MacArthur, was a Canadian Anglican priest. His father was a Baptist radio preacher Jack MacArthur.

MacArthur is a controversial preacher who has spoken out against same-sex marriage, female ordination, the Roman Catholic Church, and the social justice movement. He has given several sermons in which he addresses these concerns.

During the COVID-19 global crisis in 2020 and 2021, MacArthur defied instructions from Los Angeles County public health officials about Grace Community Church services, insisting that no one from the church had been critically ill, despite reports to the contrary.

Education

From 1957 to 1959, MacArthur attended the conservative Bob Jones College. After taking a year off, Free Methodist Church’s Los Angeles Pacific College accepted him in 1960. He spent his final year watching two football games and going on the field once for one play (see 1962 yearbook statistics).

In 1963, he received an honorary Masters of Divinity from the Bible Institute of Los Angeles’ new Talbot Theological Seminary in La Mirada, California. MacArthur received honorary doctorates from Talbot Theological Seminary (Doctor of Divinity, 1977) and Grace Graduate School (1976).

Career

MacArthur’s father recruited him to the Voice of Calvary singing quartet. It was the Christian radio in Southern California . This was while he was a student at Bob Jones University in South Carolina. From 1964 to 1966, MacArthur worked as an associate pastor for his father at the Harry MacArthur Memorial Bible Church (now Calvary Bible Church in Burbank, California), which his father Jack had founded and named after his own father.

He also worked as a faculty representative for Talbot Theological Seminary from 1966 to 1969. On February 9, 1969, he was hired as the third and youngest pastor of Sun Valley, California’s nondenominational Grace Community Church.

The Grace media team produced MacArthur’s daily radio and television program, Grace to You, which is currently carried throughout much of the world, to market audio cassettes of sermons; it was initially broadcast in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1977.

MacArthur was appointed President of Los Angeles Baptist College, currently The Master’s University, a four-year Christian liberal-arts college, in 1985. He was appointed President of the new Master’s Seminary in 1986.

On June 5, 2011, over 43 years after first taking the pulpit at Grace Community, MacArthur fulfilled one of his own life objectives by preaching through the entire New Testament.

MacArthur is a prominent supporter of expository preaching and has been named one of the most influential preachers of his generation by Christianity Today.

MacArthur has written or edited over 150 books, the most notable of which being the MacArthur Study Bible, which has sold over one million copies and received a Gold Medallion Book Award.
