Louie Giglio is an American evangelist and the founder of the Passion Movement. He is the lead pastor of the Passion City Church which is located in Atlanta, Georgia. Louie is a controversial pastor, author and public speaker.

Born on June 30, 1958 in Atlanta, Georgia to Louie F. Giglio, Jr and his mother Martha Giglio, Louie Giglio is an American with Italian descent. According to Wikipedia, Giglio grew up in the suburbs of Atlanta from where he attended the Campbell High School. After his graduation from High School he proceeded to Georgia State University. He obtained his Masters Degree in Theology from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He also obtained a Doctor of Ministry Degree from the Grace Theological School, Indiana. 

Louie did not live all his life in Atlanta. He moved from Texas to Atlanta due to his father’s illness.

MINISTRY

Louie Giglio’s journey to ministry began after he graduated from the seminary. Together with his wife, Shelley they began a weekly bible study at Baylor University called Choice.

In 1997, after moving from Texas to Atlanta, he started the Passion Conferences which is a national gathering of College Students. The first conference was held in 1997 at Austin, Texas with about 2000 college students in attendance and has been hosted around the country ever since. According to Wikipedia, Passion’s annual conferences attract around 50,000 participants. Every year, the conference invites prominent Christian speakers and musical artists. 

The speakers at the Passion Conferences include: Louie Giglio, the founder of Passion, John Piper, Francis Chan, Andy Stanley,  Beth Moore, Judah Smith, Christine Caine, Carl Lentz, Lecrae, Gary Haugen, Ben Stuart, Ravi Zacharias, Matt Chandler, Levi Lusko, and Jay and Katherine Wolf, authors of the book “Hope Heals”.

PASSION BAND

Beyond conferences and church ministry, Louie Giglio is associated with the Passion Movement, which extends to music, books, and digital media. The Passion Worship band, featuring artists like Chris Tomlin, Kristian Stanfill, and Crowder, has released numerous worship albums that are widely used in churches around the world.

The Passion Band is a worship  branch of the Passion Conferences. It is a contemporary Music band with a record of 28 albums over two decades. However, most of the albums  are live albums that were recorded during live performances and tours.

CHARITY

Another branch of the Passion Conference is the Do Something Now Fundraising Campaign. The fundraising was later renamed 72 For Freedom, which is a campaign that encourages participants in the Passion Conferences to donate to Charity.

In the year 2013, another campaign was launched by Passion Conferences named End It Now Movement. The Campaign is an anti-human trafficking campaign and $3.6 million was raised and donated to different charity organizations fighting the cause.

In the year 2008, Louie Giglio went on to plant the Passion City Church in Atlanta, Georgia. The first service of the church was held on February 15, 2009.

CONTROVERSIES

Pastor Louie Giglio has had one or two controversies trailing him at one point or another. In the year 2013, he had withdrawn from giving the benediction during Obama’s second Inauguration. This was because it became known that he had in a sermon in the 1990s urged Christians to oppose the Gay Rights movement.

Again in 2020, during an interview with Chick-fil-A CEO, Dan Cathy and rapper Lecrae on racism, Giglio had made the suggestion that Americans replace the phrase “white privilege” with “white blessing”. According to him  “blessing of slavery” had built up the framework for the world that white people live in. However, he tendered an apology on Twitter after a heavy backlash from the public following the comment.
