Theme For Open Heavens Devotional 23rd January – DEFERRING GRATIFICATION?

MEMORY VERSE:
“For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with The Glory which shall be revealed in us.” Romans 8:18

BIBLE READING: Hebrews 11:24-26

  1. By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;
  2. Choosing rather to suffer affliction with The People of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
  3. Esteeming The Reproach of Christ Greater Riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto The Recompense of The Reward.

MESSAGE:
A. At a point in a person’s life, he or she must Defer Gratification in order to succeed in this world and in the hereafter.

  1. This truth must sink into the heart of every Christian, especially the younger generation.
  2. It is unfortunate that more often than not, people do not see the need to defer gratification.
  3. They want to enjoy everything right now!
  4. Unfortunately, life is not utopian in nature.
  5. The reality is that there is no gain without pain.
  6. Even Our Salvation which some people erroneously describe as “free” was paid for by The Saviour.
  7. He agonised on The Cross to procure our liberty.
  8. Whether in The Temporal or Eternal Realm, Gratification requires Deferment.

B. Daniel stands as a great example of someone who Deferred Gratification.

  1. His act of sacrifice as a young fellow upholding God’s covenant is recorded on Daniel 1:8:
  2. “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.”
  3. The moment Daniel and his brethren matriculated into the University of Babylon, caterers were assigned to feed them with all sorts of delicacies, including the royal wine, but Daniel Deferred these fringe benefits in order to excel.
  4. No wonder, Daniel eventually enjoyed the largesse of occupying a high office after he and his colleagues graduated and became ministers in the king’s cabinet.
  5. This is The Reward of Deferring pleasure.
  6. Unfortunately, some Children of God refuse to postpone enjoyment in the present world for Eternal Bliss in the world to come.
  7. 1 Corinthians 9:25 says: “And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.”

C. Even Our Lord Jesus Christ Deferred The Pleasure of food and chose to suffer hunger when the devil told Him to turn stone into bread.

  1. Luke 4:1-4 “And Jesus being full of The Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by The Spirit into the wilderness,
  2. Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days He did eat nothing: and when they were ended, He afterward hungered.
  3. And the devil said unto Him, If Thou be The Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.
  4. And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by Every Word of God.”
  5. This was what Esau could not do, and he sold his birthright for a meal.
  6. Genesis 25:29-34 “And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint: And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.
  7. And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?
  8. And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

D. Beloved, for you to make it to Heaven, you need to forgo certain things that may not necessarily be sinful but may constitute a hindrance to your spiritual growth and cause you to be vulnerable to sin and its enticing allurements.

  1. For this reason, 1 Corinthians 6:12 says: “All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.”
  2. Learn to be like Apostle Paul who considered as being worthless those things which should have been valuable to him, so that he could attain the high calling of God.
  3. Philippians 3:7-8 “But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
  4. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for The Excellency of The Knowledge of Christ Jesus My Lord:
  5. For Whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

ACTION POINT:
Consider those things you are doing or using which can serve as impediments to your Christian calling and do away with them.
Prayer:
“Father, Please enable me with Your Grace And Power To Get Rid Of Every Worldly Impediment On My Way To Eternal Life Streaming From The Lust of The Eyes! The Lust Of The Flesh And The Pride Of life In Jesus’ Name. 🙏Amen! .”
