Vlad Savchuk Offers Healthy Marital Conflict Resolution Using Boxing Analog

Hungrygen Church senior Pastor Vladimir Savchuk better known as Vlad Savchuk has taken to social media to offer a unique perspective on navigating arguments in a marriage.

The post, titled “5 Rules from Boxing that Apply to Marriage Fights,” uses boxing analogies to encourage couples to adopt a more productive approach to conflict resolution.

The analogy compares “fighting like a gangster” to resorting to personal attacks, negativity, and anger. Instead, the post advocates for “fighting like a boxer,” emphasizing respect, communication, and controlled emotional responses.

Here according to Savchuk’s Friday Instagram post are the “5 Rules from Boxing that Apply to Marriage Fights”:

1. Don’t hit below the belt: This refers to avoiding bringing up past issues or resorting to personal attacks in the heat of the moment. Maintaining respectful communication and focusing on the present issue is encouraged.

2. Don’t hit when they are down: This translates to the importance of differentiating between complaining, which expresses feelings, and criticizing, which attacks the other person. The post suggests practicing “complaining more and criticizing less,” focusing on problem-solving rather than blame.

3. Put on gloves: This metaphor highlights the importance of using kind and respectful language during arguments. Avoiding harsh words, generalizations (“always” and “never”), and threats of divorce are emphasized.

4. Take a time-out: The post acknowledges that sometimes taking a break from the argument is necessary. It encourages couples to communicate their need for a time-out to avoid further conflict and allows them to approach the issue with a calmer mind the next day.

5. Submit to the referee: This rule metaphorically refers to the role of communication and compromise in resolving conflict. It suggests seeking a solution that benefits both partners, emphasizing reaching an agreement rather than “winning” the argument.

While Savchuk’s post offers a unique perspective, it’s important to remember that healthy communication and professional help from a relationship expert or therapist are crucial for navigating complex marital issues and maintaining a healthy and fulfilling relationship.
