James Fortune is an American gospel artist. He is also a songwriter, producer and a radio personality with WLIB.

Early Life

James Fortune, born on November 29, 1978, in Richmond, Texas. Fortune grew up in the church where his dad was a pastor. He started playing drums when he was only five years old. After finishing high school in Sugar Land, Texas, he went to Cal State Northridge. He then became the choir director at Dimension Church in Houston. Fortune isn’t just a singer, he’s also a preacher, choir leader, and manager of worship services. He knows how to make gospel and praise songs appeal to young people in the 21st century. He has a choir called FIYA, which stands for “Free in Yahweh’s Abundance.” In his music, he mixes in hip-hop and urban beats.

In 2003 James Fortune pleaded guilty to felony injury to a child and received six years deferred adjudication.  According to a civil lawsuit, Fortune burned his stepson leaving the boy disfigured with severe burns over nearly 50% of the child’s body. In October 2014, Fortune was arrested in Fort Bend County, Texas after a heated dispute with his wife, Cheryl Fortune, and was charged with aggravated assault of a family member. Fortune was later released on $20,000 bail.

“Identity” got a Grammy nomination for Best Gospel Album. The hit song “Hold On,” featuring Fred Hammond and Monica, was nominated for Best Gospel Song. His first live album, “Live Through It,” came out in 2014.

In the late 2010s, Fortune released “Dear Future Me” and “Dream Again,” featuring guest artists like Tasha Cobbs Leonard and Kierra Sheard. In 2020, he released “Dream Again (Live from Rock City)” and in 2022, “My Life,” which featured the uplifting track “Never Let Me Down.” His next project was the EP “Worth It,” dropped in 2023, collaborating once again with Monica, Waka Flocka Flame, and Zacardi Cortez, delivering encouraging praise songs to remind listeners that their struggles are valuable.
