The text for the message is from St John 12:12–15. “The next day, as the news that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem swept through the city, a large crowd of Passover visitors took palm branches and went down the road to meet him. They shouted, “Praise God! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord.”
Pastor Dollar teaches us about the triumphal entry and palm Sunday is a significant day in the Christian calendar as it marks the beginning of Holy Week leading up to Easter Sunday. It’s a day that Jesus rolled into Jerusalem on a donkey, and the people waved palm branches and laid them on the ground, shouting Hosanna. It was a fulfillment of prophecy, as it was foretold in Zechariah 9:9, “Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph; he is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey’s colt. The prophecy was fulfilled as Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, which was a symbol of peace and humility, rather than showing up on a horse, which would be the symbol of war and conquest.
The mission of Jesus was not to conquer by force but to bring peace and salvation to all who would believe in him. The people who welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem recognized him as the Messiah and as the Son of David who had come to save them. They waved palm branches, which were a symbol of victory and triumph, and they laid them on the ground as a sign of submission and honor. That was a public declaration of their faith in Jesus as the King who had come to rescue them from the oppression of the Roman Empire. They thought that Jesus, who was raising the dead and doing miracles, was coming to Jerusalem to deliver them from the Roman Empire and that he was coming as a politician. Jesus was not coming as a politician; he came to give salvation so that we could have a close relationship with God.
